Zapier

Partly replaceablefrom €17.81/month (converted from $19.99, rate of Oct 2, 2026)editor verdict · 0 votes

No-code automation platform: an event in one app triggers an action in another, among thousands of tools.

Five or six automations that really matter to you are doable: a script, a cron, a webhook. Zapier, for its part, sells more than 9,000 already-authenticated connectors, automatic retries, a clear history and an interface anyone can use. If you are comfortable with code, you save money. Otherwise, you mostly lose maintenance time.

What you lose

  • The catalogue of ready-made connectors.
  • Maintaining OAuth connections when an API changes.
  • Automatic follow-ups and run history.
  • An interface usable by someone who doesn't code.
  • Service availability, with nothing to monitor.

Existing alternatives to Zapier

  • ActivepiecesOpen source

MIT-licensed community edition, self-hostable with Docker, with no task counter.

  • Very complete self-hostable automation tool under a “fair-code” licence, not open source in the strict sense.

The prompt to build it yourself

Build me a small personal automation runner to replace Zapier, limited to the few flows I really use.

Stack: a single Node process on my VPS. Express for incoming webhooks, node-cron for scheduled tasks.

To do:
- A flow = a JS file in pipelines/ that exports its trigger (cron expression or webhook path) and an async run(payload) function.
- The steps are code: fetch() calls to the APIs I want, keys in .env. Adding an integration means writing about twenty lines.
- Each run is logged in SQLite: flow, payload, status, duration, error. On failure, 3 retries with increasing wait (p-retry).
- A /runs page, reachable locally, with the last 100 runs, the detail of the payload or error, and a button to rerun.
- After the last failure, send me a notification on an ntfy topic defined in .env.
- Each webhook URL contains a secret token specific to the flow; everything else is rejected.
- Two examples: a daily 8 am cron flow (weather, then ntfy) and a webhook flow (POST received, row added to a CSV).

Out of scope: visual interface, connector catalogue, third-party OAuth (token APIs only). Each service that requires OAuth costs an afternoon, to be written in the README.

README: systemd unit, adding a flow, .env variables.
