Node-RED
Low-code visual flow-based programming tool to collect, transform and visualise data in real time and automate tasks: more than 5,000 reusable nodes and flows offered by the community, built on Node.js, running on a Raspberry Pi or in the cloud. Deployment locally (Docker), on a device (Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone Black, Android) or in the cloud (FlowFuse, AWS, Azure). The project belongs to the OpenJS Foundation and its contributors; its creators are Nick O'Leary and Dave Conway-Jones, FlowFuse is the active sponsor, IBM and Hitachi former sponsors. Licence and interface languages not stated on the page (Apache-2.0 according to the GitHub repository).
For a few automations (send an email when a form arrives, file a document, link two services), a thirty-line script written to measure is easier to read and test than a diagram. What Node-RED brings is prototyping speed and the thousands of nodes already written for sensors, APIs and databases. It is not meant to be reproduced: it is a tool, and a good one. The hidden cost: maintaining visual flows becomes painful once they go beyond a few dozen nodes.
What you lose
- More than 5,000 reusable nodes and flows.
- The visual editor and live debugging.
- Ready deployments for Raspberry Pi, Docker and the cloud.
- The community and foundation that maintain the project.
Existing alternatives to Node-RED
No free or open-source alternative currently meets our checks (active project under a free licence, free plan read on the vendor’s own site). Rather than invent one, the list stays empty.
What a home-built tool costs once it exists
- Hosting and database: a server cost, and automatic backups you actually test.
- Security and GDPR: dependency updates, an HTTPS certificate, protection of your customers’ data.
- Upkeep time: who fixes the tool on a Saturday night in the middle of service if the server goes down?
The prompt to build it yourself
Build a small automation script for my business, replacing a visual flow tool. Context: a hotel; I want (1) to be notified by email when a quote request arrives through the site form, (2) to file the reservations file exported by the software into a dated folder each morning, (3) to receive the number of requests received each week. To do: - A small service that receives the form by webhook, stores the request in SQLite and sends a summary email. - A scheduled task that moves the export file to a "YYYY-MM-DD" folder and checks it is not empty. - A weekly summary sent by email. - A log of each run with a success or error code, and an email alert on error. Out of scope: visual editor, connectors to other services. Stack: Python or Node.js, SQLite, system scheduled tasks. Credentials in .env, never in the repository. README: how to run, scheduling, backup.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does Node-RED cost, and what do you really pay for?
- Listed price: free. What the subscription covers and is hard to maintain yourself: More than 5,000 reusable nodes and flows.; The visual editor and live debugging.; Ready deployments for Raspberry Pi, Docker and the cloud.; The community and foundation that maintain the project..
- Where do you start to build an equivalent of Node-RED?
- Copy this page’s prompt into Claude, Codex or Cursor to get a first prototype. Then plan for hosting, data backups and GDPR compliance: that is what costs the most to maintain over time.
