Airtable

Partly replaceableeditor verdict · 0 votes

Spreadsheet-style database, with forms, views, automations and interfaces for teams.

A spreadsheet-style database with typed fields, linked tables, saved views and CSV import/export is doable in a few days for solo use, and Baserow or Teable exist as free software. Airtable weighs mostly on teamwork: permissions per table, automations, interfaces for non-technical people, syncs. If you are alone, replaceable. As soon as colleagues join in, that is where the subscription is justified.

What you lose

  • Rich field types (attachments, rollups, formulas).
  • Interfaces for non-technical people.
  • Built-in automations.
  • Syncs and integrations.
  • The mobile app, access rights and scaling up.

Existing alternatives to Airtable

  • BaserowOpen source

Open-source no-code database (MIT licence), with a hosted free plan limited to 3,000 rows and a smaller ecosystem of integrations.

  • TeableOpen source

Spreadsheet-style database under the AGPL-3.0 licence, with a hosted free plan, less mature than Airtable on integrations and interfaces.

  • Grid with forms, automations and scripts, whose free plan allows up to 10,000 rows.

The prompt to build it yourself

Build me a personal spreadsheet-style database to replace Airtable.

Stack: Node, Express, better-sqlite3 (one file data/base.db), Tabulator grid with plain JavaScript, no build step.

To do:
- Create tables and columns from the interface, typed text, number, date, choice, checkbox or URL. Each table is a real SQLite table, which other tools can query.
- Inline editing in the grid, sorting on click, filters per column.
- Saved views (name, filters, sort, hidden columns) listed in a sidebar.
- Link columns: a cell references rows from another table, chosen from a list, shown as clickable pills.
- A quick entry page /form/<table> with one field per column.
- CSV import and export per table.
- Localhost only, no account or telemetry.

Out of scope: multi-user permissions, automations, hosted interfaces. When colleagues need to enter data, that is the moment to use Airtable.

README: installation and location of the database.
