n8n is free software, so there is nothing to rebuild: you install it on a small server and stop paying the cloud subscription. Half a day, plus a little rigour afterwards. The price to pay is that you run hosting, updates and above all backups yourself, notably of the encryption key.

The prompt to build it yourself
Install n8n self-hosted for me, to replace n8n Cloud. Do not rebuild the tool, it is open source: install it properly on my VPS. To do: - Docker Compose with the official image, SQLite storage (enough for personal use), a named volume for /home/node/.n8n, automatic restart. - n8n only listens on 127.0.0.1 and is published by my reverse proxy on a subdomain over HTTPS. n8n's user management protects the editor. - Set N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY in .env and ask me to back it up separately. Without it, all saved credentials become unusable: say so clearly. - WEBHOOK_URL pointing to the public subdomain, so external services can call my workflows. - A nightly backup: export of workflows and credentials through the n8n CLI, copy of the volume into backups/YYYY-MM-DD/, 14 days kept. - An update script that pins a precise version, backs up first, then restarts. Never a blind :latest. - Two test workflows imported: an RSS summary by email, and a webhook alert to Telegram. Out of scope: multi-user and high availability. It is a single person's automation box. README: creating the owner account, restore test, update procedure. Running it is precisely what the subscription did for me.
