Webflow
Visual website builder with CMS and hosting, to create and publish showcase and marketing sites.
For your own sites, a static generator based on YAML blocks, with content in git, is simpler, faster and costs almost nothing to host. What you lose is the visual editor, precisely what designers and clients pay Webflow for: changing a page without touching code. If the site is your own, replaceable. If it is delivered to a client who must edit it alone, no.
What you lose
- The visual editor close to what a designer does.
- The built-in CMS and hosting.
- Animations and interactions without code.
- Handing the site over to a client who edits it themselves.
- Built-in forms and SEO tools.
Existing alternatives to Webflow
- WebstudioOpen source
Open-source visual builder with visual CSS, reusable components and CMS data; free custom domain only when self-hosted.
- PlasmicOpen source
Hosted visual builder and CMS, free custom domains; the Plasmic branding stays displayed on the free plan and the model relies on React.
- Concrete CMSOpen source
In-context page editing, blocks, collections and workflows; more conventional design freedom.
The prompt to build it yourself
Build me a block-based showcase site generator, to replace Webflow on my own sites. Stack: Eleventy (static site), Nunjucks, YAML. To do: - A page is a YAML file that lists blocks: hero, feature grid, testimonial, pricing table, FAQ, call to action, footer. Each block is a Nunjucks partial. I build a page by editing YAML, not HTML. - CMS-style collections without a CMS: blog posts and case studies in Markdown with frontmatter, list and detail pages generated at build time. - A single file of design variables (colours, type scale, spacing): a style change touches only one file. - Responsive by default (every block works at 360 px and at 1280 px), images optimised with @11ty/eleventy-img. - Forms POST to a small Express server that emails me (SMTP in .env). - Build into dist/, deployment by rsync to my VPS behind Caddy. Sitemap and OpenGraph tags per page. - Content in git, no accounts, no telemetry. Out of scope: drag-and-drop visual editor, handover to a client. If I need visual editing, I self-host Webstudio. README: reference of the blocks with a complete example page, DNS and Caddy.
