Wix
Website builder with templates, AI tools, online shop, bookings and apps.
If you only need your own site (home, services, about, contact), a static site fits in a weekend, loads faster and costs almost nothing to host. What you lose: the visual editor for changing things without touching code, and the shop, booking and app modules. If you like editing a text file and pushing with git, replaceable. If someone else has to update the site, no.
What you lose
- The visual drag-and-drop editor.
- The app store.
- The built-in online shop and reservations.
- Templates, hosting and managed domain names.
- Support and mobile apps.

The prompt to build it yourself
Build me the website for my business, to replace Wix: the only site I need, not a site builder. Stack: static site Astro. To do: - Pages: home, services, about, contact. The texts live in Markdown and YAML files: changing a text never touches the layout code. - A single stylesheet, mobile first, with CSS variables for the brand colours and typography. No CSS framework. - The contact form POSTs to a small Express server: it emails me through SMTP (credentials in .env) and appends a row to data/messages.jsonl. Honeypot field against spam. - SEO basics at build time: sitemap.xml, robots.txt, title, meta and Open Graph tags per page, and a LocalBusiness JSON-LD block with hours and address. - `npm run build` then rsync of dist/ to my VPS, served by Caddy with automatic HTTPS. - No accounts, no telemetry, no administration: changes go through git. - For appointment booking, link to my booking tool; do not build a booking engine. Out of scope: drag-and-drop editing, app store, e-commerce. If the business needs a real shop, that is a subject for Shopify. README: DNS records, Caddy configuration excerpt, list of files to edit for common text changes.
