Retool
Platform for building internal tools (admin panels, dashboards, back offices) on top of databases and APIs. Free plan for up to 5 users; the Team plan costs €9 a month per builder and €5 per internal user, billed annually.
An admin panel, a back office or a dashboard on top of your database is exactly what a code assistant builds well, and you own the result with no per-user pricing. Appsmith and ToolJet, free software, also offer a visual editor if you prefer clicking to coding. What you lose: Retool's library of ready-made components and connectors, permissions and audit logging, and not having to maintain the tool yourself. For a small team with a few screens, it is a good trade.
What you lose
- A library of ready-made components and connectors
- Permission controls and audit logging
- Hosting and updates handled by the vendor
- A visual editor with little code

The prompt to build it yourself
Build an internal admin panel to replace Retool for my small team. Do not copy Retool: only the screens I list. I will describe the data and who can do what. To do: - A Next.js app with login and roles (admin, read-only), on top of my existing PostgreSQL database. - The screens I list: table with search and filters, detail and edit form, a few key figures. - Every write action recorded in a log table (who, what, when). - Access to the database through a restricted role, never the main one. - Deployment behind login on an inexpensive host, secrets in environment variables. Out of scope: visual editor, workflows, mobile apps. README: adding a screen, managing roles, deployment, and a reminder that I am responsible for the panel's security.
