Algolia

Replaceableeditor verdict · 0 votes

Search service for sites and applications: keyword and semantic search, ranking, personalisation and recommendations. Free plan with 10,000 search requests a month and 50,000 records.

For a site of a few thousand pages or a modest catalogue, SQLite's full-text search (FTS5) or a free engine like Typesense is enough, with typo tolerance. Algolia weighs for large volumes, personalisation and worldwide speed. For most showcase sites and catalogues, it is one of the easiest replacements.

What you lose

  • Worldwide speed at large volumes
  • Personalisation and recommendations
  • Search analytics
  • Ready-made integration with frameworks

The prompt to build it yourself

Build me a search engine for my site, to replace Algolia, for a catalogue of a few thousand items.

Stack: Node, SQLite with FTS5 (better-sqlite3), a small Express API, a search component in plain JavaScript.

To do:
- Indexing from a JSON file or a table: searchable fields and filter fields declared in a configuration file.
- Tolerant search: prefixes, accents ignored, relevance ranking (bm25) with weight per field, tolerance for simple typos.
- Faceted filters with counts, sorting, pagination, highlighting of matched terms.
- Response in under 50 ms on 10,000 items, measured by a test.
- Incremental reindexing when an item changes; endpoint protected by token.
- Log of searches with no result, with no personal data.

Out of scope: semantic search, personalisation, worldwide replication.

README: indexing, field configuration, and a reminder that Typesense does this with more polish if volume grows.
