Postman
Platform to design, test and document APIs: request client, collections, mock servers and monitoring. Free plan; Solo plan at $9 a month, Team at $19 per user.
An HTTP request client with collections, environment variables and history is very easy to replace: Bruno and Hoppscotch are free software and already do the essentials, with no mandatory account. What you lose: team sync, scheduled monitoring and hosted mock servers. For solo use, this is one of the easiest replacements in the catalogue.
What you lose
- Team sync of collections
- Scheduled API monitoring
- Hosted mock servers
- The built-in AI features
Existing alternatives to Postman
- BrunoOpen source
Free API client (MIT) whose collections are plain files in your git repository, usable without an account.
- HoppscotchOpen source
Free API client (MIT) in the browser, self-hostable, with collections and environment variables.
The prompt to build it yourself
Build me a small local HTTP request client to replace Postman in my solo use.
Stack: local web app (Node, Express, plain JavaScript), collections stored as JSON files in a folder versioned by git.
To do:
- Create requests (method, URL, headers, JSON or form body), organise them into collections and folders.
- Environment variables (dev, prod) with {{variable}} substitution, secrets read from .env and never written to the files.
- Response display: status, duration, size, headers, formatted body, copy as curl.
- Simple assertions on the response (status, JSON field equal to) runnable across a whole collection, with a summary.
- Import of a Postman collection (v2.1 format) and of an OpenAPI file.
- History of the last 100 requests; localhost only, no account or telemetry.
Out of scope: team sync, scheduled monitoring, hosted mock servers.
README: launch, collection format, and a reminder that Bruno or Hoppscotch already do this if I prefer to maintain nothing.Frequently asked questions
