GitLab
Git hosting and DevSecOps platform: repositories, merge requests, built-in CI/CD, security scanning and package registry. Free plan with 400 compute minutes a month; the Premium plan costs $29 per user a month billed annually.
GitLab's core is itself free software, and Gitea gives you repositories, merge requests, issues and CI on a small server in an afternoon. For a solo developer or a small closed team, it is enough. What you lose: the integrated security scanning, the container and package registry, the compliance features and the compute minutes of a managed service. For an organization that needs those, the Premium plan has real value.
What you lose
- Integrated security scanning and compliance features
- The container and package registry
- Managed CI/CD compute minutes
- Hosting, backups and updates handled by the vendor
Existing alternatives to GitLab
- GiteaOpen source
Lightweight Git forge (MIT), self-hostable: repositories, merge requests, issues, built-in CI.
The prompt to build it yourself
Set up a self-hosted Git server to replace GitLab for my private repositories. Do not build a forge: deploy Gitea on my VPS. To do: - A docker-compose.yml with the official image, SQLite storage to start, data volume in ./gitea-data, automatic restart. - Caddy in front for automatic HTTPS on a subdomain that I will give you; SSH for git on a dedicated port. - Registration closed after my account is created, two-factor authentication enabled, nothing else exposed. - A runner for the CI on the same machine, with a resource limit. - Migration of my repositories from GitLab with the built-in migration tool, issues and merge requests included. - A nightly encrypted backup with age (repositories and database), copied off the server; write restore.sh and have me run a restore test. Out of scope: security scanning, package registry, compliance. README: launch, account creation, update, restore, and a reminder that I am now responsible for availability and security updates.
