GitHub

Partly replaceableeditor verdict · 0 votes

Code hosting and collaboration around Git: repositories, pull requests, issues, continuous integration (Actions) and the Copilot assistant. Free plan with unlimited private repositories and 2,000 CI minutes a month.

Hosting your Git repositories on your own server is half a day with Forgejo or Gitea: pull requests, issues and CI are already there. What you lose: the network effect (everyone has an account, contributors and clients are there), the ecosystem of ready-made actions and the availability of a managed service. For solo use or a small closed team, replaceable; for open source open to contributions, no.

What you lose

  • The network effect: contributors, clients and recruiters are already there
  • The ecosystem of ready-made CI actions
  • The availability and backups of a managed service
  • Copilot and the built-in security tools

Existing alternatives to GitHub

  • GiteaOpen source

Lightweight Git forge (MIT), self-hostable: repositories, pull requests, issues, built-in CI.

The prompt to build it yourself

Set up a self-hosted Git server to replace GitHub for my private repositories.

Do not develop a forge: deploy Forgejo (or Gitea) on my VPS.

To do:
- A docker-compose.yml with the official image, SQLite storage to start with, data volume in ./forgejo-data, automatic restart.
- Caddy in front, for automatic HTTPS on a subdomain that I give you; SSH for git on a dedicated port.
- Close sign-ups after my account is created, enable two-factor authentication, expose nothing else.
- A runner for Actions (compatible with GitHub Actions syntax) on the same machine, with a resource limit.
- A migration of my repositories from GitHub with the built-in migration tool, issues and pull requests included.
- A nightly backup encrypted with age (repositories and database), copied off the server; write restore.sh and make me run a restore test.

Out of scope: developer social network, Copilot, dependency security scanning.

README: launch, account creation, update, restore, and a reminder that I am now responsible for availability and security updates.
