Finary

Partly replaceableeditor verdict · 0 votes

App that brings together bank accounts, brokers, crypto and property in a dashboard of net worth and asset allocation.

The dashboard (positions, prices, wealth curve, allocation) is a weekend. The difficulty is automatically connecting hundreds of European banks and brokers: you have to go through a licensed aggregator (PSD2 framework) or maintain fragile connectors. With CSV imports and public price APIs you get honest figures, but at the price of a monthly chore. If that chore is exactly what you pay to avoid, this is not a replacement.

What you lose

  • Automatic sync with banks and brokers.
  • Mobile apps, with notifications and Face ID.
  • Automatic property valuation and loan tracking.
  • The community and comparison with other users.
  • Someone who fixes the connector the day your bank changes its API.

The prompt to build it yourself

Build me a local net-worth tracker. Single user, on my machine, no account, no cloud, no telemetry.

Stack: Next.js, TypeScript, Tailwind, SQLite (better-sqlite3, simple SQL migrations in /db), Recharts. No ORM, no authentication library.

Data model:
- accounts: name, institution, type (cash, broker, retirement, crypto, property, loan), currency
- positions: account, symbol (optional), quantity, manual value (optional), cost basis (optional)
- quotes: symbol, date, close, currency
- snapshots: date, total value, detail as JSON

To do:
1. CRUD for accounts and positions; valued by symbol, or with a manual value for property and cash.
2. CSV import at /import: paste or upload a file, map the columns (symbol, quantity, cost basis), choose the account, preview before confirming.
3. A quote refresh route: crypto through CoinGecko, stocks and ETFs through a single configurable HTTP endpoint. Cached in the quotes table; never a network call when displaying a page.
4. `npm run snapshot`: recalculates net worth and stores a row. Document running it daily by cron.
5. Dashboard: net worth, evolution curve, allocation ring by asset type, positions table with value, weight and gain against cost basis.
6. Multi-currency: base currency in .env, exchange rates fetched in the same task, everything converted for display.

Out of scope: linking bank or broker accounts, PSD2 aggregators, collecting credentials, mobile apps, multi-user, tax return.

Variables in .env.example: BASE_CURRENCY, COINGECKO_API_KEY, QUOTE_API_URL, QUOTE_API_KEY, FX_API_URL. Sample data: three fictional accounts and eight positions. README under thirty lines.
