Canva

Partly replaceableeditor verdict · 0 votes

Template-based graphic design tool: social media posts, documents, presentations and brand materials.

A small editor with predefined formats, text, images, layers, brand palette and PNG/PDF export can be built in a few days, especially with Fabric.js. But Canva is paid for its library: thousands of templates, licensed photos and illustrations, AI tools, teamwork, shared brand kits. If you always make the same four visuals with your own images, replaceable. If you live off the variety of templates, no.

What you lose

  • The template library.
  • Licensed photos and illustrations.
  • The AI tools for images.
  • Teamwork and shared brand kits.
  • Links to print and social networks, and the mobile apps.

Existing alternatives to Canva

  • Adobe's free plan for social media visuals, short videos, documents and templates; the template ecosystem is smaller than Canva's.

  • Canva's free plan with templates, documents, presentations and exports; without Magic Resize or the full brand kit.

  • Free design suite with templates, PDFs and scheduling, limited to three collaborators.

The prompt to build it yourself

Build me a small visual editor to replace Canva Pro, for my own use.

Stack: Fabric.js on a canvas element with plain JavaScript, and a tiny Express server for saving and export. Script tags only, no build step.

To do:
- Preset formats: Instagram post 1080x1080, story 1080x1920, X banner 1500x500, A4 poster, plus a custom format.
- Editing: text with my local fonts, image import, rectangles and lines, reorderable layer list, snap guides at the centre of the canvas.
- A brand panel read from brand.json: my 4 colours and my 2 fonts as clickable swatches.
- Each visual is saved in designs/<name>.json and reopens identically; duplicating a visual serves as the template system. Provide 3 starter visuals.
- PNG export at 1x and 2x, and PDF by printing the canvas page with Playwright.
- Everything local, with no accounts or telemetry.

Out of scope: stock photos, AI image tools, collaboration. I bring my own images.

README: adding fonts, where the visuals are stored on disk.
