Vercel

Partly replaceablefrom €17.82/month (converted from $20, rate of Oct 2, 2026)editor verdict · 0 votes

Web application hosting and deployment platform (Next.js in particular), with deployment on every commit. Free Hobby plan for non-commercial personal projects.

Hosting an application on your own server with Docker, a proxy and a deployment script is doable. What Vercel brings: deployment on every commit, preview environments, the worldwide delivery network and HTTPS with no effort. It is for you to decide whether those gains are worth the subscription. The free plan is limited to non-commercial personal projects.

What you lose

  • Automatic deployment on every commit
  • Preview environments
  • The worldwide delivery network
  • HTTPS and managed certificates

The prompt to build it yourself

Build me a self-hosted deployment for a Next.js application, without claiming to replace Vercel.

Stack: a small Linux server, Docker, a reverse proxy with automatic HTTPS (Caddy), GitHub Actions.

To do:
- Production Dockerfile and compose file; environment variables kept out of the repository.
- Automatic deployment on every push to the main branch, with fallback to the previous version on failure.
- One preview environment per branch, with a temporary address.
- Simple monitoring (site status, disk space) and email alert.
- Data backup and a tested restore procedure.
- README with the server update procedure.

Out of scope: worldwide delivery network, serverless functions.
