Twenty
Open-source CRM of French origin: unlimited custom objects, fields and views, workflows, AI agents, MCP server, REST and GraphQL API, webhooks, two-factor authentication, more than 30 languages. The core is open and self-hostable for free (AGPL-3.0 for the most part, some modules under a commercial licence according to the repository); cloud: Pro at $9 per user per month billed annually (25% discount advertised), Organization at $19 with row-level permissions, SAML and OIDC SSO, custom domain and audit logs, Enterprise from $50,000 a year. Free trial with no card; the page shows no free plan.
A configurable CRM with its own objects, fields and views is exactly what Twenty offers, and this is a case where the open-source software is a better starting point than starting from zero: the data model can be configured without development. Rebuilding a CRM makes sense for very targeted needs. Mind the «open core» model: part of the enterprise features is under a commercial licence; check which ones you will need before self-hosting.
What you lose
- Custom objects, fields and views without development.

What a home-built tool costs once it exists
- Hosting and database: a server cost, and automatic backups you actually test.
- Security and GDPR: dependency updates, an HTTPS certificate, protection of your customers’ data.
- Upkeep time: who fixes the tool on a Saturday night in the middle of service if the server goes down?
The prompt to build it yourself
Build a configurable CRM for my business, replacing an open-source CRM. Context: a caterer managing corporate clients, events and quotes. To do: - Three linked objects: Company, Contact and Event (date, number of guests, budget, status). - Custom fields I can add without development (text, number, date, list). - Views: filterable list, Kanban board by event status, calendar. - A history of exchanges on each record and follow-up tasks. - CSV import and export, and a read-only REST API. Out of scope: workflows, AI agents, SSO, row-level permissions. Stack: web app, PostgreSQL. README: how to run, backup, deleting a contact on request (GDPR).
