Toast
American all-in-one point-of-sale and management platform for restaurants: till, table and online ordering, kitchen, payments, with dedicated hardware. The public pages read cover the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom; the vendor's support also mentions Canada and Ireland. No confirmed French offer. Official price list not recorded (the site points to country-specific plans, with hardware and payment fees on top).
Toast is the American model of the all-in-one till: table ordering, kitchen display, online ordering, all tied to its own payment processing. Part of it reproduces well in French: the digital menu, table ordering sent to the kitchen, the kitchen screen. Two things do not: the terminal and the payment processing, which belong to the vendor, and the certification. In France, point-of-sale software that records sales must be NF525-certified or attested compliant, which an in-house till does not have. To take payments, use a certified vendor; keep custom work for the extras.
What you lose
- The vendor's till hardware and payment processing.
- Tax certification of the till (NF525 in France).
- Online ordering, kitchen display and reports already linked together.
- The ecosystem of integrations and partner apps.
Existing alternatives to Toast
No free or open-source alternative currently meets our checks (active project under a free licence, free plan read on the vendor’s own site). Rather than invent one, the list stays empty.
The vote is on the verdict (could a home-built tool replace this till?), not a recommendation: in France, a till must be NF525- or LNE-certified.
