Taiga
Free and open-source agile project management: Kanban with epics, subtasks, swimlanes, work-in-progress limits, filters and search, option to move to Scrum (backlog, sprint planning, estimates, sprint board, burndown, Taiga Seed estimation tool), issue tracking with customisable types, priorities and severities, dashboards, wiki, customisation, integrations partly through Zapier. On-premise option for large teams; paid plans on a pricing page not read. Announced as 100% open source, licence not stated on the page (MPL-2.0 according to the repository). More than 20 languages, French is not named. The historic repository has been inactive since late 2023, but the Taiga organisation's repository was updated in September 2026.
A Kanban board with columns, cards, owners, tags and a backlog is the most classic web development project, and Taiga did it cleanly. Scrum adds sprints and a burndown, which remain simple calculations. The selection criterion is therefore the project's vitality: check the activity of the current repository before building on it, since the historic repository stayed inactive for several years. For a team of under ten people, a custom tool or a more active solution such as Plane or Vikunja are options.

What a home-built tool costs once it exists
- Hosting and database: a server cost, and automatic backups you actually test.
- Security and GDPR: dependency updates, an HTTPS certificate, protection of your customers’ data.
- Upkeep time: who fixes the tool on a Saturday night in the middle of service if the server goes down?
The prompt to build it yourself
Build a small Kanban board for my team, replacing an agile project management tool. Context: 4 people, a development project, a backlog of 60 items, one-week sprints. To do: - A backlog with cards (title, description, owner, priority, tags, estimate). - A sprint board in columns (to do, in progress, in review, done) with a limit on the number of cards in progress. - Sprint planning by drag-and-drop from the backlog and closing with carry-over of unfinished cards. - A simple burndown (points remaining per day). - Issues with a severity, and the ability to turn an issue into a card. Out of scope: epics, swimlanes, integrations. Stack: web app, SQLite. README: how to run, backup.
