Sling

ReplaceableOur view: a custom-built tool is realistic.free (paid plans from €1.51/month/user)casevibecode verdict · 0 votesPage updated on October 23, 2026 · Published by North Studio

Team scheduling tool for shops and restaurants: schedule creation, shift templates, leave requests, shift swaps, automatic assignment, mobile time clock, timesheets, geolocation, shared kiosk, absence tracking, private and group messages, announcement feed, tracking of labour cost, overtime and paid leave (Premium and Business), payroll reports. Free up to 30 users; Premium at $2 per user per month ($1.70 annually), Business at $4 ($3.40 annually), 15-day trial. Page entirely in English; Toast customers have an offer through the Toast shop.

A weekly grid of shifts by role, with unavailability, a shift-swap board and an hours count, is a project you build in a few days, and Sling's scheduling part is free anyway. What is not trivial: in France, working-time rules (daily and weekly rest, overtime, hospitality collective agreements) must be coded and kept up to date, and time tracking must stay compliant. The schedule alone is simple; its legal dressing is not.

What you lose

  • Mobile time clock with geolocation.
  • The shared time-clock kiosk.
  • Real-time labour cost tracking (Premium and Business).
  • The built-in team messaging.

Existing alternatives to Sling

No free or open-source alternative currently meets our checks (active project under a free licence, free plan read on the vendor’s own site). Rather than invent one, the list stays empty.

What a home-built tool costs once it exists

  • Hosting and database: a server cost, and automatic backups you actually test.
  • Security and GDPR: dependency updates, an HTTPS certificate, protection of your customers’ data.
  • Upkeep time: who fixes the tool on a Saturday night in the middle of service if the server goes down?

The prompt to build it yourself

Open in ClaudeOpen in CodexOpen in Cursor
Build a team scheduling tool for my restaurant, replacing a scheduling app.

Context: 14 employees (floor, kitchen, dishwashing), weekly schedules, 2 services a day.

To do:
- Employees with role, contract, contractual hours and recurring unavailability.
- A weekly grid per day and role, with drag-and-drop and copy of the previous week.
- A count of hours per employee with an alert if the total exceeds the contract or if the rest between two services is under 11 hours.
- A shift-swap board between employees, approved by the manager.
- Publication of the schedule with email notification and a personal view on a phone.
- A CSV export to prepare payroll.

Out of scope: mobile time clock, legal payroll calculation.

Stack: web app, PostgreSQL. README: how to run, backup, and a reminder that the legal working-time count and collective agreements must be checked with your accountant.
