resOS
Reservation software for restaurants: table bookings, floor plan, several services, free email confirmations and reminders. Free up to 25 bookings a month; Basic at €45 a month (350 bookings), Plus at €85 (750), Unlimited at €125 (unlimited), with 50% off the first month for new restaurants billed monthly; 90-day refund guarantee. Add-on modules: waiting list (€7.99 a month), customisable booking widget (€7.99), Google, Facebook and Instagram booking buttons (€11.99 for Facebook and Instagram), online payments and deposits with no-show fees (€11.99). SMS at €0.10 each. Booking form translated into several languages, including French. Six currencies.
A booking form with slots, capacity per service and a floor plan is a realistic project for a restaurant, and it is the free part of resOS. What costs more: the waiting list with notification, the deposit with no-show fees (which goes through a payment provider), and above all the booking buttons built into Google, Facebook and Instagram, which assume agreements with those platforms. If most of your bookings come by phone and your site, a custom tool is enough.
What you lose
- The booking buttons on Google, Facebook and Instagram.
- Online deposits with no-show fees.
- The waiting list with notification.
- Confirmation and reminder SMS.
Existing alternatives to resOS
- Easy!AppointmentsOpen source
Open-source appointment booking (GPL-3.0) with slots, email notifications and an API; to be adapted for tables.
What a home-built tool costs once it exists
- Hosting and database: a server cost, and automatic backups you actually test.
- Security and GDPR: dependency updates, an HTTPS certificate, protection of your customers’ data.
- Upkeep time: who fixes the tool on a Saturday night in the middle of service if the server goes down?
The prompt to build it yourself
Build a small table booking system for my restaurant, replacing a reservation subscription. Context: a 45-seat restaurant, two services (lunch, dinner), about 25 bookings a day. To do: - Services with hours, average meal duration and maximum covers per slot. - A simple floor plan (tables, number of seats) and assignment of a table to a booking, with overlap detection. - A booking form on my site (date, party size, contact details, allergen remarks) that respects capacity, and an email confirmation with a cancellation link. - A day view for the team with expected arrivals, and a status (arrived, seated, left, no-show). - A simple waiting list when a slot is full. Out of scope: Google and social network booking buttons, online deposits, SMS. Stack: web app, PostgreSQL. README: how to run, backup, how long to keep contact details (GDPR).
