Plane
Open-source task tracking and project management tool: projects, work items, cycles, modules, views, intake, estimates, pages, up to 12 users on the free plan. Cloud: Pro at $8 per user per month ($6 annually) with AI credits, wiki, time tracking, dashboards, integrations (GitHub, GitLab, Slack); Business at $15 ($13 annually) with recurring items, email and form intake, SAML and OIDC, customer records; Enterprise on quote. Open source and self-hostable, no price stated for self-hosting; SAML and OIDC are available there from Pro, AI credits are reserved for the cloud. Page in English.
A task board with statuses, tags, due dates and a history is the basis of all these tools, and can be built. Plane adds cycles (work iterations), a pages module and intake by email and form. If your team mostly uses tasks and views, a custom tool is enough; for sprint tracking, roadmaps and integrations with code, Plane is more advanced. Paid plans are per user: the cost rises quickly with the team.
What you lose
- Cycles, modules and roadmaps.
- Intake by email and form (Business plan).
- Integrations with GitHub, GitLab and Slack.
- The cloud's AI credits.

What a home-built tool costs once it exists
- Hosting and database: a server cost, and automatic backups you actually test.
- Security and GDPR: dependency updates, an HTTPS certificate, protection of your customers’ data.
- Upkeep time: who fixes the tool on a Saturday night in the middle of service if the server goes down?
The prompt to build it yourself
Build a small task and iteration tracker for my team, replacing a project management tool. Context: a team of 5 people, working in two-week cycles. To do: - Projects and work items with title, Markdown description, owner, priority, estimate and tags. - Two-week cycles with the planned items, and automatic carry-over of unfinished items to the next cycle. - A Kanban board per project and a filterable list view. - A public intake form that creates a «to triage» item. - A progress chart for the current cycle. Out of scope: code integrations, email intake, AI credits, SSO. Stack: web app, PostgreSQL. README: how to run, backup.
