Mautic
Open-source marketing automation platform: drag-and-drop campaign builder, mobile-friendly email and landing page editor, point scoring to qualify prospects, centralised contact view, sending by email, SMS, WhatsApp and notifications, GDPR compliance features, REST API and plugins. To host yourself, or as managed offers (Managed Mautic, Mautic Hosting) whose terms are not detailed; 14-day trial. The Mautic name is a trademark of the Mautic project within the Open Source Collective. The page names neither the licence (GPL-3.0 according to the repository) nor French.
A sign-up, a welcome email, a second email if the person did not open the first and a prospect warmth score can be programmed for a small contact base. What Mautic adds: a scenario editor, several channels and tracking of behaviour on your site. The usual pitfall: email deliverability and respecting consent, which do not depend on the software. For a restaurateur or freelancer, most scenarios fit in three or four rules.
What you lose
- The drag-and-drop campaign builder.
- Tracking of visitor behaviour and prospect scoring.
- Sending on several channels (email, SMS, WhatsApp).
- The managed offers and support.
Existing alternatives to Mautic

Open-source newsletter and mailing list server (AGPL-3.0), self-hosted; sending goes through your own SMTP.
What a home-built tool costs once it exists
- Hosting and database: a server cost, and automatic backups you actually test.
- Security and GDPR: dependency updates, an HTTPS certificate, protection of your customers’ data.
- Upkeep time: who fixes the tool on a Saturday night in the middle of service if the server goes down?
The prompt to build it yourself
Build a small email follow-up tool for my business, replacing a marketing automation platform. Context: a hotel that wants to follow up people who requested an event quote. To do: - A request form on my site that creates a contact with time-stamped consent. - A three-step scenario: immediate confirmation email, reminder at D+3 if the contact has not replied, last message at D+10, stopping if the contact replies or books a meeting. - A status per contact (new, contacted, meeting, lost) that I change by hand. - A simple score: +1 per click in an email, +3 per reply. - An unsubscribe page and deletion of a contact on request. Out of scope: SMS, WhatsApp, behaviour tracking on the site, scenario editor. Stack: web app, PostgreSQL, a scheduled job. README: how to run, backup, SPF and DKIM setup of the sending address and a reminder about consent (GDPR).
