Docker
Container tools: Docker Desktop, Docker Hub and cloud build services. Docker Personal is free; Docker Pro costs $9 a month ($11 monthly), Team $15 per user and Business $24.
The container engine is free software and complete alternatives exist: Podman (daemonless) on Linux, Colima on Mac, which run the same images and most of the same commands. For a solo developer, moving from Docker Desktop to one of them takes a few minutes. What you lose: the graphical interface, the desktop integration and Docker Hub with no pull limit, and the paid cloud build offers. In a company, check Docker Desktop's license terms before deciding.
What you lose
- The graphical interface and desktop integration of Docker Desktop
- Docker Hub with no pull limit
- Cloud build and test services
Existing alternatives to Docker
- PodmanOpen source
Daemonless container engine (Apache-2.0), compatible with most Docker commands.
- ColimaOpen source
Containers on Mac and Linux from the command line (MIT), Docker-compatible.
- Rancher DesktopOpen source
Containers and Kubernetes on the desktop (Apache-2.0), with a graphical interface, an alternative to Docker Desktop.
The prompt to build it yourself
Replace Docker Desktop with a free solution on my machine. Do not build anything: install and configure Podman (Linux) or Colima (Mac) depending on my machine. To do: - Installation and configuration, with a docker alias to the new command if useful. - A test of my existing docker-compose.yml files (podman compose or docker compose with Colima) and a list of what does not work identically. - A verification script that starts my projects and reports differences. - The steps to log in to a private registry. Out of scope: cloud builds, graphical interface. README: installation, daily use, known differences with Docker Desktop.
