TastyIgniter

ReplaceableOur view: a custom-built tool is realistic.freecasevibecode verdict · 0 votesPage updated on October 23, 2026 · Published by North Studio

Open-source software to host yourself so that restaurants take orders directly on their site, with no commission on each order; direct payments, essential extensions included, optional paid extensions. The core is free; premium support (installation, migration, priority help) is on quote. Page in English; team country and languages are not stated on the page.

This is the case where the open-source software is itself the best starting point: a menu, a cart, an ordering funnel, a choice of collection or delivery and a back-office can be reproduced for a single restaurant, and TastyIgniter's code is a readable model. What stays out of reach of an in-house build: payment gateways (to be plugged in), managing a delivery fleet and automatic ticket printing. The real cost is not the licence but hosting, security updates and setup time. If you are coming from platforms that take a commission, it is a credible way out.

What you lose

  • Hosting, backups and security updates run by you.
  • The payment gateways already provided in the extensions.
  • Vendor support for installation and migration (on quote).
  • Extensions maintained by the community.

Existing alternatives to TastyIgniter

No free or open-source alternative currently meets our checks (active project under a free licence, free plan read on the vendor’s own site). Rather than invent one, the list stays empty.

What a home-built tool costs once it exists

  • Hosting and database: a server cost, and automatic backups you actually test.
  • Security and GDPR: dependency updates, an HTTPS certificate, protection of your customers’ data.
  • Upkeep time: who fixes the tool on a Saturday night in the middle of service if the server goes down?

The prompt to build it yourself

Open in ClaudeOpen in CodexOpen in Cursor
Build a small online ordering site for my restaurant, replacing a commission-based ordering platform.

Context: a 40-seat restaurant, takeaway only, 30 orders a day.

To do:
- The menu in a database (categories, dishes, options such as doneness and sides, VAT-inclusive prices, availability).
- A cart and a 3-step checkout: pickup slot, contact details, payment.
- Payment through Stripe Checkout (keys in .env) with confirmation by webhook, and a confirmation email to the customer.
- A back-office: today's orders with status changes (received, preparing, ready), preparation time, a sound alert when an order arrives.
- Slots capped per time window so the kitchen is not overloaded.
- The mandatory pages: legal notice, terms of sale, allergens, privacy policy.

Out of scope: courier delivery, loyalty, mobile app.

Stack: Next.js, PostgreSQL. README: how to run, backup, updating dependencies, and a reminder that card payment stays with Stripe.
