Shopify
Online shop platform: catalogue, payment, orders, shipping and physical till, hosted and maintained by the vendor.
A mini-shop for a handful of products, with payment delegated to Stripe, can be built in a weekend. But as soon as you sell for real, you inherit European VAT, shipping rates, payment disputes, fraud and the site's availability on sale day. Shopify mostly sells that peace of mind, plus the ecosystem of apps around it. For a real business, this is not a good playground.
What you lose
- A proven checkout that reassures buyers.
- Handling payment fraud and disputes.
- Themes and the app store.
- Delivery and VAT modules and the physical till.
- Support and holding up under peaks.
