Notion
All-in-one workspace: pages, databases, wiki and project management, both for solo note-taking and for working with others.
For solo use, a Markdown wiki with tables and search fits in a few days. What cannot be copied is the block editor, fine-grained permissions, sync across all your devices and live collaboration: ten years of product. The real question is whether you pay for that, or only to store notes.
What you lose
- The block editor (drag and drop, / commands).
- Smooth sync between computer and phone.
- Sharing with permissions per page and per person.
- Database views: table, kanban, calendar.
- Templates, integrations and AI connected to your pages.

The prompt to build it yourself
Build me a notes and small-database tool for a single user, to replace Notion. Stack: Node, Express, better-sqlite3. Server-rendered pages, a little plain JavaScript, no front-end framework, no build step. To do: - Pages in Markdown stored in SQLite. Editing in a textarea with live preview (marked). Markdown is the format, not blocks. - [[Page]] links between pages, with backlinks shown at the bottom of each page. - Tables: a page can contain a table with typed columns (text, number, date, choice), rows editable in place, stored as JSON. - Full-text search (SQLite FTS5) from a field in the header. - An automatic nightly export of all pages as .md files in a folder, so my notes are never trapped in the tool. - Listens on localhost only, no account or telemetry. Out of scope: multi-person editing, sync between devices, block editor. Do not try to build them. Finish with a README: installation, location of the database and export folder.
