Mailchimp

Partly replaceableeditor verdict · 0 votes

Email platform: campaigns, automations, sign-up forms and statistics.

Sending a newsletter to a short list with Amazon SES is doable in a few days. The difficulty is that sending well has to be earned: a properly configured domain (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), gradual volume ramp-up, clean handling of bounces. In France, the GDPR requires provable consent and easy unsubscribing. For a list of a few hundred people, replaceable. For a business that lives off its emails, keep a service whose job it is.

What you lose

  • Deliverability worked on every day.
  • Templates and the visual editor.
  • Automation scenarios.
  • Shop integrations and advanced segmentation.
  • Turnkey compliance and support.

Existing alternatives to Mailchimp

  • MauticOpen source

Open-source marketing automation platform (GPL-3.0) for segmentation and campaigns, heavier to run.

  • PlunkOpen source

Open-source tool (AGPL-3.0) for campaigns, transactional emails and workflows, with lighter contact management.

  • Free campaigns, forms and automations, limited to 300 sends a day.

The prompt to build it yourself

Build me a small email campaign tool for short lists, to replace Mailchimp.

Stack: Node, Express, better-sqlite3 on my VPS. The administration is only reachable on localhost or VPN; only sign-up and unsubscribe are public.

To do:
- Contacts with tags and custom fields, CSV import and export, segments saved as filters (has tag X, signed up after a date, opened the last campaign).
- Campaigns written in Markdown, converted with mjml into clean single-column HTML email, with a generated text version.
- Sending through Amazon SES (keys in .env) with rate limit and per-recipient status; bounce and complaint notifications automatically remove the addresses concerned.
- Built-in compliance (GDPR): unsubscribe link and postal address in every footer, List-Unsubscribe header, double opt-in at sign-up, timestamped consent.
- Optional open tracking per campaign, off by default. A report with sent, bounces, unsubscribed.
- A single SQLite file, no telemetry, no third-party trackers.

Out of scope: drag-and-drop template editor, automation scenarios, shop integrations.

README: warn that landing in the inbox has to be earned, document SPF, DKIM and DMARC, recommend a gradual ramp-up in volume.
