Cloudflare is first of all a network: data centres across the world that absorb attacks and serve your pages close to your visitors. No home-made solution reproduces that. You can host your own DNS or a reverse proxy, but not the capacity to withstand an attack. Keep it for DNS and protection; the free plan is enough for most sites.
