Buffer
Social media post scheduling, with queues and calendar, to publish on several channels.
Publishing on Mastodon and Bluesky, whose APIs are open, with Buffer-style slots, is a weekend. The problem starts with Instagram, LinkedIn or X: their APIs are paid, subject to approval or change without warning. Buffer sells exactly that, the maintenance of the connections. If you publish on the open networks, replaceable. If your customers are on Instagram and LinkedIn, no.
What you lose
- Maintaining connections to several networks.
- Faithful previews of posts.
- Statistics.
- Approval workflows and team queues.
- The mobile apps and tracking of changes in platform rules.
Existing alternatives to Buffer
- PostizOpen source
Very complete open-source scheduler (AGPL-3.0) whose self-hosting needs PostgreSQL, Redis, Temporal and your own network credentials.
- Mixpost LiteOpen source
Open-source scheduler (MIT licence) for a single user, with queues and basic statistics; team features are in the paid edition.
- BrightBean StudioOpen source
Open-source scheduler (AGPL-3.0) with approvals, inbox and statistics, usable hosted or self-hosted, but from a still-young project.
The prompt to build it yourself
Build me a personal social post scheduler to replace Buffer. Stack: Node, Express, better-sqlite3; a localhost page with a writing area, image attachment and the queue sorted by send time. To do: - Only two targets: Mastodon (access token) and Bluesky (app password, @atproto/api), credentials in .env. A small adapter per network so one can be added later, without scaffolding anything I do not use. - Buffer-style slots: I define publishing times (for example weekdays at 9 am and 5 pm in my time zone) and a new post takes the next free slot; it can also be fixed to a precise date and time. - A node-cron task every minute publishes the messages that are due, marks each row sent or failed, retries 3 times with increasing delay, and marks before sending so it never publishes twice. - Character counter per network; attached images stored in media/ next to the database. - A history of the last 100 posts with links to the live posts. - Runs on my always-on machine; localhost only, no accounts or telemetry. Out of scope: X, Instagram and LinkedIn (paid APIs, subject to approval or hostile, to be stated in the README), statistics and rich previews. README: how to get a Mastodon token and a Bluesky app password.
